Remember the innovative artists behind instrumental "Sounds of life"? Lolo and Sosaku have their hands full with great new projetcs such as the Lake on Fire movie in which they light fires in abandoned factories while being chased by the police for doing so. Together with their friend Ezequiel and Portugal-based Uiu they are creating a feature film about firefitti. We caught the three creative Barcelona-based engineers for an interview on an empty rooftop in the middle of Barcelona's centre.

What do you think about Barcelona's art scene today?

Lolo: It is rising again. The thing is that many people are doing great things but have no place to express and show it in. So for the scene to be wider and alternative, more exhibiting galleries and places are needed. Mutt is a bookshop that is a very inspiring place to me.

You are pursuing a different art form called Firefitti in Lake on Fire, how would you describe it?

Ezequiel: You could say that it is ordinary graffiti with fire, explosions and smoke. It is very dangerous, to do the actual firefitti. We have only about 20-30% causality when we paint. Because when the bombs explode we cannot know where the paint goes.

Tell us about Lake on Fire and how the project started?

Lolo: We wanted to do something new; we wanted to change the old way to paint with graffiti. We (Lolo, Ezequiel, Uiu) started with spray cans and bombs in September 2010. We invited Sosaku to paint as well one day, but something weird happened in the factory that day...

Sosaku: Images appeared in the fire and it was like a sign. I was burned by the fire and got a big scar.

Ezequiel: It was like baptism.

Lolo: The film Lake on Fire is about Juan who meets the fire. One part is about the normal life in Barcelona and one part is about Juan and the fire. Our friend Uiu was the first to try firefitti with explosions. He is very important to the project. He lives in Portugal but he helps a lot with the firefitti.

What inspired you to make a movie?

Everybody: Since we are going to do a video of each piece of the different firefitti performances, a movie would be the best way to display it. It is also the fire and the process that is most important so we decided to make a movie about it.

Have your achievements with Lake on Fire been the same from the beginning or changed during the process?

Sosaku: It has definitely been changing.

Lolo: The idea from the beginning was just to do the firefitti and not a movie, but then we realised that it was easier to do movie about it. We wanted a script, actors and all this other stuff was added. The ambition now is just to finish it, and then we'll be happy.

Sosaku: Yes, to see the final result.

What were the most difficult/most enjoyable parts of the project?

Ezequiel: The most difficult must have been the actual graffiti. It is uncontrolled so it can be very dangerous.

Lolo: The most fun was when we took gasoline from a gasoline store and put it in bottles for the bombs. We were driving with the car full of gasoline!

Ezequiel: When the police come it's also fun, escaping is fun.

Lolo: But this isn't a funny project really, it is more serious than that as there is a lot of tension involved. We enjoy the thrill. We always go with the bombs in the car and if someone collides with us, they're screwed. It is also difficult because Uiu lives in Portugal and Sosaku is in Japan sometimes, which makes it difficult to work consistently. We work together but at the same time we don't.

Who is involved in the project?

Lolo: Fabià Matas and two actors, we do all the basic things ourselves. Ezequiel is also an actor in the movie. We have to have one character that can control the fire whilst recording. There are also many friends who help us out with different matters, but there will be more people involved also.

What is it like to work with Fabià Matas Subietas?

Lolo: We really like him. He is really nice, we are really happy and proud that he is a part of the project. He is interested in doing other projects after this and he inspires us a lot.

Which environments in Barcelona will you try to capture in the film?

Lolo: Nowhere special. He (Fabia) is around at some places, at a bar and some neighbourhoods in Barcelona.

Sosaku: We don't want people to recognize the environments; at least it is nothing we have aimed for.

What do you think the reactions of Lake on Fire will be like?

Lolo: People will like it because we do it in a very serious way. We want to present the film in festivals so it can be showed to al large number of people. So people can see another form of art.

Do you think it will be an inspiration to other artists?

Sosaku: We hope that others will like it of course. But this is a bit difficult way to paint so there are not many people who can pursue it.

Do you think you will create more movies in the future?

Lolo: Probably, we have tried really hard with this one. It is a long process because there are so many aspects that have to be worked on.

When can we see the finishing results?

Lolo: Before 2013...no, before 2035! Haha. No... this year we hope. We hope that there won't be any accidents. Friends and family worry about us.

How will you proceed with firefitti after Lake on Fire?

Lolo: We want to do big things. But we need support to do it. After the movie we hope that people will believe in us. We have a lot of ideas but need money to make them happen.

Sosaku: We also need permission, so if we get support maybe we also can get permission. We don't want to perform in the street; it is illegal and a danger to others.
