He began studying music at the age of five, starting out by playing guitar and studying jazz and rock. Moving from playing with others to working on his own and developing a style mixing elements of house and R &B. Why did he get into deejaying in the first place? “I’m not the best dj, I got into deejaying because people asked me to play…and I really prefer to play live sets, when I’m deejaying and I have a mix on I’m like okay what am I doing now, drinking?...and then I forget I have to mix the next track. (laughs)”
He’s been deejaying under the alias clip! since January, the name chosen from the 1-2 minute clips recorded to send to the Red Bull Music Academy. He was accepted this past year, which is no small feat considering there were over 4000 applicants. His acceptance gave him the freedom to quit his day job and take off to Madrid to for a two week stint with full access to the studios and creative influences of other djs and industry professionals. The academy is where he met Jorge Caiado and the two have been working together ever since, frequently flying between Lisbon and Barcelona. They've got two new tracks coming out and you can catch them playing at Neopop Festival in Portugal the 8-11 of August alongside Moodyman, Scuba, Cobblestone Jazz, and Julio Bashmore.
Clip! is undoubtedly off to a great start, and asking him about any challenges he’s facing establishing himself onto the scene, he commented, "…with the ease of access to technology, anyone can record their own tracks in a bedroom studio. It’s very difficult to get yourself out there. It isn’t easy to reach international magazines, even national magazines…but it is good also there is new media trying to push new content to readers around the world…to get attention from the media you have to have your own style but it’s something you have to build up over the years.”
So where do you see yourself in 5 years? “I hope (my music) will finally sound perfect, because now I finish a track and I think, Oh, I don’t like this, I do tracks in 2 days and I can’t work on that track anymore. I hope to finish them quickly and not waste time thinking about it.” I asked him for one career goal/aspiration, he replied “To collaborate with some over produced, American singer from the early 2000’s”…amen to that ;)
He gave us a mix with a preview of his new upcoming tracks which you can take a listen to below and you can check out more about clip! here @ his official facebook page
