Places in Barcelona: the eerie romance of a foggy day in the mountains

Tibidabo on a Foggy Day

Going to Tibidabo is undoubtedly a fun day out for anyone. It's a bit of an adventure; the train, the funicular, the teeny tiny bus that takes you around the mountain edge to the entrance of the church and theme park.

Try taking the trip on a really foggy day, like I did this Spring. Admittedly, l found the church interior to be quite underwhelming, but from its location you're meant to get a stunning panorama of the city. However, due to literally standing among the clouds, I couldn't see beyond about ten metres in front of me; no incredible view, no notion of how high the church tower was, and no idea where exactly the distant screams of, presumably, rollercoaster riders were coming from.

It was eerily reminiscent of abandoned fairgrounds in horror stories; the sense of impending doom coupled with mysterious mist, although there was something artfully romantic about it too. Fairy lights floated. A child eating candy floss was a silhouette in the distance. It was all quite dreamy really. I didn't pay into the theme park but you can still wander through part of it, a charming little park, for free. On a typically clear day, with a view of the city I'm sure it's an enjoyable trip. But if you want something special, wait for the fog!
